Humans wish for lots of things

Like wearing pretty crowns or becoming powerful kings

But, at some point, they start to lose track of the things that matter most

Just like when the Genie asked Alaadin, “What do you wish for?”

And the little boy was blinded by the fickle promise of “more”

So he requested all that he assumed would bring him happiness

And forgot that happiness is not an object to obtain

Not even from a magical lamp

He forgot that Happiness is not something that he can gain

The way he would an apple or a crown

Rather, it’s something to choose

And that’s why Alaadin’s story had turned into such a mess

In a world so obsessed with more, most people have forgotten the blessings they already have in their lives. You know it; you’ve seen it. A person who’s feeling depressed because they don’t have an iPhone 18 Pro Max even though they have a pretty great phone. A person who wants a brand new TV even though the one they have works just fine. More, more, more…this seems to be this world’s curse. People just can’t seem to stop wanting more. The end result? Constant feelings of unhappiness, dissatisfaction, and frustration.

Now, don’t get me wrong: there’s nothing bad about wanting a brand new phone or TV. What I’m against, however, is the strange “taken for granted” attitude that most people adopt these days. For example, they want a brand new phone, but they only come to realize the worth of their old phone once it’s gone or broken beyond repair. They come to appreciate what they already have way too late, and they feel extremely guilty afterwards. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

You can wish for more and still be grateful for what you already have. Don’t you ever forget that. Your normal day is someone else’s dream. Yes, especially the things you take for granted. The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little.

Maybe your floors creak and it drives you crazy, but at least they aren’t broken.

Maybe rain slips in through your roof, but at least you have a roof atop your head. A lot of people don’t have that.

Maybe you’ve had a bad day, but at least you’re still breathing. Easily, soundly, without the need for an artificial oxygen supply that a lot of patients need. Be grateful for that small blessing too.

Honestly, if you tried to count all the blessing that you have, you’ll probably reach infinity and it still wouldn’t be enough. So I encourage you, dear reader, to start seeing the more in the less. The importance of the little moments. The significance of the small blessings. Don’t you dare take that for granted.

As a kid, I used to watch from behind the curtains

The sweet facade which the adults greeted each other with

In parties and social gatherings

Back then, I also used to frown and wonder why

Do most of their conversations sound either sly or dry

Even now that I’m slightly grown,

I don’t see any good reason to justify the frequency of their lies

Nor did I find a plausible explanation why they’d attack someone

Who’s not in a disguise

I’m tired, so I’ll ignore their cutthroat realm

All while keeping my little bubble of childhood safe

Within me forever and ever

When I first wrote this poem, I never imagined that I would return to it so much, as if it was a safety net that I kept on clinging onto to avoid drowning in the depths of despair. I know that this might sound like an exaggeration (and maybe it is), but that’s what I seriously believe in. In a world that makes fun of innocence and cherishes deception, it can get not just tiring but mentally draining to twist our minds and hearts into this world’s faulty logic. But here’s the thing: we don’t have to.

We don’t have to twist our hearts to fit the world’s whims. We don’t have to dim our inner light to satisfy someone else’s useless pride. No, enough is enough.

We should seriously return to our innocence, but don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying you should become a doormat. I’m saying that you can be good and innocent while still setting healthy boundaries. You can be kind and still say no to others. You can love Disney movies even if you’re above eighty. You can read Mickey Mouse in front of your colleagues.

I specifically wanna touch on that last example. Most people would view such a thing as embarrassing or awkward, but my question is: why should it be that way? No, actually, why should you care about other people’s opinion in the first place? What’s wrong with reading Mickey Mouse in the workplace? What’s wrong with listening to a Frozen Soundtrack while on a train commute? What’s wrong with watching SpongeBob while cleaning up the house?

These acts are not embarrassing or childish; they are treasures. So I hope that you cherish your inner child, dear reader, and never let the world stain it with its illusions.

Okay, but what do you mean by serial playlist, you ask? I mean that the playlist is currently not complete, and that I’ll add new songs to it at the same time that I publish new poems associated with those songs. In other words, it’s gonna be so much fun and full of surprises!

Our world’s power system

Is but a mere spider web

Built with such an inhuman mechanism

That would snare any ignorant moth to it

The moth thinks that being in the center makes it strong and mighty

But that illusion is the farthest thing from reality

For the moth has become the perfect victim for the starving spider

Who had lured the little moth into its deadly trap

The moth tries to escape the web, but it only gets tighter

Around its frail body

The spider creeps closer

And the moth finally regrets

Agreeing to submit

To the spider’s threats

Power is sweet and addictive

But too much of it

Is nothing less than destructive

Oh, now isn’t the promise of eternal power such a counterfeit?

In a world so obsessed with power and might, we sometimes have to just stop and wonder what is it that this world is actually fighting for. Is power just a strong position? A label? A status? Or is it something far deeper? Something that is beyond the illusion that this world is trying to sell about strength.

I encourage you, dear reader, to look at power as something beyond a fleeting status. Beyond a strong physique. Beyond a pretty face. Indeed, what is true power? What makes one strong and another weak? Mere physical strength? Intelligence? Money?

What if I told you it’s none of the three? What if I told you that sometimes, the greatest strength- the greatest power- is in believing in who you are in a world trying to shatter your confidence. In believing in your ability to learn and grow in a world so full of doubts. In your ability to stay kind in a world that promotes cruelty as strength. In your ability to stay resilient in a world that is so busy shaking in fear.

In your ability to show true strength in a world that sells only counterfeit power to those hungry enough to take it.

This little poem was largely inspired by Melanie Martinez’s thought-provoking song, Spider Web. It sounds like a simple song in the beginning, but the lyrics unravel a much darker truth the longer you listen to it and take it in. This is the slowed & reverb version, because I like how it makes the song sound much deeper, but you can still just find the normal version on Youtube or anywhere else.

Instead of letting it eat you alive

Don’t just live in order to survive

Live on so you can realize that the old versions of you

I feel lonely in large crowds

Even though I’m not alone, I feel as if I truly am

In such confined chambers, I tend to immediately scram

To a place where my true self won’t be intruded upon

To where I could hear soft melodies that soothe my heart

Where I can sit down and craft calming art

This feeling has been given a rather fancy name

This wild feeling that breaks the chains of being tame

A feeling called: “Freedom”

When was the last time you ever spent time with yourself?

I don’t exactly remember when or where, but I do remember that I brainstormed the idea of this poem back when I was standing in the midst of a huge crowd. I still recall it as clear as day, how contradictory it felt back then, and how it kinda still does. To have so many people around me, yet feel so alone. On the other hand, I feel most alive when I’m actually alone, in every sense of the word. Oh, solitude is such a sweet cure for life’s brazen madness. Because here’s the truth: alone doesn’t mean lonely. Just because you might see someone who prefers their solitude over other people’s company, it doesn’t necessarily that they are sad or depressed. And even if you are a born extrovert, I’d still encourage you to sit with yourself every once in a while. For only you can discover the treasures inside you, and not anyone else.

It’s true that only the brave

Are buried just once in their graves

On the other hand, it can be said that Cowardice is a graveyard

In which the corpses in their coffins don’t even try hard

To reach a better resting place

They prefer to stay as creatures that are bothersome to kill

But at the same time, they are unable to truly live

So they cling onto their fear, believing that it’d protect them

From the chill

That’s seeping through the dirt from six feet under

Will you master your fear, or will you let it become your master?

Nowadays, you see all over the internet people who try to disguise nonchalance as confidence. As power. But during the really tough times, they kneel to their fears. To their hidden demons. And the reason why they’re so weak against their fear is because they pretend it isn’t there. But as we all know, pretending that the fire doesn’t exist won’t stop it from burning. Rather, it would grow and grow until it devours anything and everything in its way.

When I was writing this poem, I was truly turning Shakespeare’s quotes in my head. Particularly that one quote at the very beginning of the poem:

“Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of Death but once.”

Interesting. Not only did this quote hit home, but it also offered me a new perspective about cowardice and bravery. Every time you surrender to your fears, a part of your soul dies. Do that enough times and you’ll become nothing more than a walking corpse. Alive outside, empty inside. On the other hand, if you try to face your fears, if you have enough will to be afraid and still do, then you won’t fall into the trap of Cowardice’s graveyard. Your soul won’t end up as a coffin there, but rather you’ll enjoy the hidden strength of courage. Of true freedom.

Why am I writing this? I don’t truly know, but maybe it’s because I wanted to remind you, dear reader, of the dangers behind surrendering to your fears and worries. Every time you try to convince yourself that your fear is justified, a part of you dies. Instead, I encourage you to take the risk, whatever that may look like for you. Start the business. Write the book. Play the instrument. Teach the lesson. Chase your dream.

I’m not saying that your success will be guaranteed, for then I would only be lying, but I am saying that you won’t regret taking the risk, for you’ll either win or learn. And that all by itself is more of a win-win situation, wouldn’t you agree?

As I said, you won’t regret taking the risk. But you’ll always regret not taking it.

So I advise you to try to face one of your fears today, and see what happens.

Like racing raindrops on a foggy window’s glass

While unpleasant ones pass with the pace of a snail

Making the very air you breathe go stale

Time on this earth is finite, indeed

So instead of worrying about when your time will come,

Seize this rare chance of being alive

And make your memory live on long after you’re gone

It’s not your age that will glorify your tale

Rather, it’s your memories, hopes, and dreams come true

All of it might as well become a bright path

There are just some emotions

That we don’t want anyone else to see or hear

There are secrets that we keep only to ourselves

But sometimes they can be too much to bear

And cause the bottles of our emotions to fall off the shelves

I wrote this poem like a really, really long time ago, but I still know it so intimately. So vividly. Because when I wrote it, I wasn’t thinking about anything except how some people-myself included sometimes- keep on denying their intense emotions and bottle them up so obsessively. So much so that they try to place these bottles on very high shelves, as if though that’ll prevent anyone from seeing them. But what these people fail to realize is that a bottle can hold only so much, and that, if pushed to the limit, it’ll eventually explode and fall off the shelf. Denying the problem doesn’t solve anything; it worsens it. There’s only so much you can achieve by keeping up the pretense. Or in this case, by continuing to hide your deepest emotions instead of facing them.

May this be a gentle reminder for you today: Bottling things up only delays the problem, but facing those feelings and those problems head-on, even when the right thing is not clear, will bring you much closer to the clarity and happiness that you desire. Inshallah 🤍🥀🌹

This poem holds a special place in my heart. I don’t mean that the other poems are not important, but it’s just that this one feels…like a familiar calling. Like an old friend.

I wrote this poem back in 2022, when I was contemplating my own experience with failure. When you’re in the gutter, it can be sometimes hard to find a way out. But something that I’ve learnt is there’s always an exit. There’s always a way out. But the first step to finding it is by acknowledging your humanity. Your fragility. Your weaknesses. Because here’s the thing: you will make mistakes, whether you like it or not. So it’s much, much better to be aware of that fact rather than deny it. However, although it’s inevitable that you’ll make mistakes, no one said that you can’t learn from them. “Your next move matters more than your last mistake.” This a quote that I’ve stumbled upon that deeply resonated, and one that I believe clearly aligns with the theme of this poem as well. So, dear reader, may this be a gentle reminder for you to not be so hard on yourself, but to also take the lead and have the courage to learn from your mistakes. 🌹🥀

Sometimes your mind is your own worst critic

And you start to feel as if you can no longer control it

But you can

Agonizing yourself over every little mistake you make

Would do nothing but ruin your entire life span

Instead of enacting such a vicious approach,

Become your own mentor and coach

Don’t kick yourself when you’re down

Rather, guide it through the tumult of your thoughts

Teach yourself how to swim so you don’t drown
